From humble beginnings, driven by the need to support a growing family, to a successful enterprise that embraces both residential and commercial projects, the company embodies a commitment to quality, creativity, and community. In this interview, we dive deep into the story behind the business, exploring the values, challenges, and memorable moments that define their unique approach to construction.
What inspired you to start your general contracting business?
First and foremost was the need to support my growing family. I first started my business in 2008. My wife and I had two children and we were just beginning our journey as foster parents, which would eventually lead to the adoption of two more kids. I had been working in the industry since 1997 and took some drafting courses at a local community college, but I knew that the hands-on work was where I belonged.
My first inspiration for carpentry was when I was young. My dad always allowed me to help him build things. My first big project was a beautiful Victorian tree house that he built, and he let me scab a very shabby looking attic on top. It had a trap door, which was amazing for me at the time.
What do you enjoy about your work?
I enjoy customer relations. I like meeting people and figuring out what it is that would make their life better. I enjoy making that happen in the context of remodeling or new builds. For example, I make a real difference in a clients’ lives when I make their space more organized, usable, and welcoming. I’ve designed and built an apartment for a client so their in-laws could live close by; they had us for dinner and we all celebrated the space. I have so many examples of happy clients and their appreciation keeps me motivated.
What values guide your approach to residential and commercial construction?
I value honesty and integrity in our work. If we say we are going to do something, we do it. We often encounter unforeseen problems along the way in the construction process and it’s important that the clients know I am going to be there every step of the way. We are there for them and will not leave them hanging. We strive to be reasonable in price and accomplish their goals.
What challenges have you faced as a family-owned business, and how have you overcome them?
One challenge is that we are working all the time. When you live with your work partners, you need to create boundaries. Work-talk is not allowed at the dinner table.
What are the benefits of working as a family?
My benefit is that I have a brilliant wife who helps to guide the business in a way that I cannot. My daughter, Maya, is a great fit as a business manager. She is good at all business administration tasks and is, dare I say, better at it than her mom and I. She understands both the detailed tasks and the big picture needs. Most of all, we all enjoy each other’s company. It is a pleasant work experience day-to-day and we are all focused on the same goal of providing quality construction services.
Can you share a memorable project or client story that highlights your company’s strengths?
Just today I had the kindest Google review. She really told it the way it was. We updated her porch and finished her basement so she could have welcoming spaces to enjoy her grandkids and other family/friends. Our partnership enhanced her quality of life and experience with loved ones. Moments like that make me feel like a rich man.
How do you stay current with industry trends and ensure high-quality craftsmanship?
We attend remodeling expos, read trade magazines, we are home builders association members, and we utilize talented design professionals and think outside the box for creative solutions. For example, in a primary bedroom remodel, I used space under the staircase and installed large pull-out closets; they were functional, aesthetic, and made use of space that is normally dead space. We enjoy new challenges that clients present to push us to the next level.
What advice would you give to someone considering starting a family-owned business?
Get your base team together of accountants, lawyers, insurance agents, and bookkeepers in addition to your actual “build team”. Running a business is its own set of skills in addition the trades.
What do you enjoy most about working in construction, and how has the industry changed over the years?
I like working in construction because at the end of the day you can see that you built something; you did something tangible. Construction methods are always improving and we have to stay up on that. For example, treated wood changed. They used to use arsenic and now the treatment contains metals and we need to use different fasteners. Also, there are a lot more requirements in deck building now. There is more focus on the structural connections with the railing attachments. Staying up-to-date on materials and policy is very important to those in the industry.
How do you manage client relationships and ensure their satisfaction throughout the construction process?
Constant communication. Daily communication. We ask them often if they are satisfied. We seek and value their feedback. We communicate by phone, email, and we have an app that specifically ties the client to their project. Through the app they can make project selections, be informed on project progress, and provide feedback.
What are your future goals for the company, and how do you see it evolving?
We’ve met big goals by moving our company to Anderson, SC in 2019. We are just in the position where we can start thinking long-term and where we are headed. I can say that we have some big, fun ideas and our clientele will want to stay tuned!
